What to Expect During Your Eye Examination

During the Taylor-West & Co private eye examination, hospital-grade equipment is used to accurately assess your vision and check for any concerns related to the overall health of your eyes. Our eye examinations are more than simple vision checks, we meticulously examine the overall health of your eyes, inside and out.

The eyes are extremely precious organs, and they can be affected by several conditions easily detected with a thorough medical eye test. And with the use of the OCT and Optomap equipment, early detection and referral for diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, macular hole, retinal disease, and diabetic retinopathy will often mean there is a lower of a chance of such issues affecting your vision and the overall health of your eye.

Your Consultation

During your eye examination, you have the opportunity to thoroughly discuss any concerns you may have about your eyes, any hereditary diseases within your family, your vision, and your current optical prescription. Your optometrist will also discuss any problems you are experiencing with your eyes, your general eye health, your lifestyle, and whether you work from home or spend a lot of time with your eyes fixed on a screen.

We take any concerns you have about your eyes very seriously, making sure that you feel comfortable and listened to during your consultation. We treat our patients as though we are treating a member of our family, so we guarantee you’ll receive only the highest standard of care and compassion.

The Taylor-West & Co Eye Examination

Rather than an unqualified optical assistant conducting your pre-screening tests, our qualified optometrists will complete all aspects of your test. Their expertise will allow them to clearly identify any potential problems within your eyes and signs of any other medical conditions.

It is important that we obtain a clear understanding of your needs so that we can deliver the highest quality care that is tailored to you and your needs.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

This advanced method of eye scanning uses lasers in a similar way an ultrasound uses sound waves to highlight the different layers that form the back of your eye. With one quick, non-invasive scan, the OCT test takes a 3D cross-section scan of the back of your eyes and a retinal photograph.

The highly detailed images that come from the OCT scans will help us determine the current condition of your eyes, allowing us to detect conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), vitreous detachment and even diabetes.

Optomap ultra-wide-angle retinal imaging

Available in our Hove, Dulwich, and Battersea branches, the Optomap ultra-wide-angle image is a highly advanced technology that enables us to capture 80% of your retina in a single image.

Compared to the 15% that traditional high-street methods offer, this eye scan test enables us to detect conditions such as retinal detachments far more quickly and easily – all without the need to dilate your pupils with eye drops.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Goldmann Tonometry

Rather than using the traditional puff of air to detect the pressure within your eye, (which, let’s face it, everybody hates), we use Goldmann Tonometry or iCare tonometry. WIth no puff involved, these techniques are quick and painless, helping your optometrist accurately check your eye pressure to better determine your risk of glaucoma.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Subjective refraction

The refraction is the part of the test which allows your optometrist to find your spectacle prescription. It involves the optometrist showing your various lenses using either a trial frame or phoropter, and asking you whether certain lenses make the letters on the chart appear ‘better or worse’. This allows us to determine whether you are long- or short-sighted, and/or astigmatic. We will also assess whether you need additional power for reading.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Slit lamp examination

We utilise a powerful microscope to examine the front surface of the eyes. Whilst exploring structures such as your lids and lashes, cornea, iris, and lens, we keep an eye out for any abnormalities – which is particularly important to know for those who wear contact lenses.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Ophthalmoscopy

Using either a slit lamp and Volk lens or an ophthalmoscope, your optometrist will examine your vitreous and retina to check the health of the back of your eyes. We are looking for conditions such as glaucoma, macula disease, diabetic eye disease, vein or artery occlusions and retinal detachment or tears.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Visual field screening

During this test, your optometrist will assess your ability to detect spots of light in your peripheral vision. These tests provide the data necessary to detect the early stages of glaucoma, as well as any conditions that could be associated with any headaches you may be experiencing.

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Snellen chart

Also known as the letter test chart, the Snellen chart is used to assess your visual acuity (i.e. how far down the chart you can read), and will be used to determine the visual improvement you can expect from glasses. If you do need glasses, we have a fabulous selection of truly stunning hand-made frames for you to choose from.

Eye Examinations

How Often Should You Have an Eye Test?

During your appointment, we will discuss any potential hereditary risks to your eye health and sight in order to determine how often you should have your eyes tested. As a general rule, we recommend that you book an eye examination at least every two years to allow us to monitor and track the health of your eyes (though many patients on our Care Plan prefer the peace of mind of an annual checkup).

If your optometrist has no concerns when it comes to your vision and the health of your eyes, an adult eye test is recommended at least every two years. If you have any concerns regarding the overall health of your eyes, simply book an adult eye test at any time.

We believe the TW&C Eye Examination is the most thorough eye test you can have on the high street. We pride ourselves on being upfront about our eye test costs, there are no hidden charges or tier system that increases your costs and, if you need to repeat a test or have a referral letter written, it’s all included in your eye examination fee.

Professional Spectacle Dispensing

Once all of your tests with your optometrist have been completed, you will have the opportunity to discuss your results. This could mean that everything is all clear, with the health of your eyes not being a cause for concern. Alternatively, if your vision has changed, you may require a pair of spectacles to match your prescription and lifestyle. Or even if your prescription is stable, you may simply want another style or a spare pair!

When it comes to choosing the perfect spectacles, you won’t have to sacrifice your style to see clearly. We believe that the absolute best frames are designed by companies who specialise in designing spectacle frames. That sounds obvious, doesn’t it? But most designer frames on the market today are mass-produced and made from cheap materials.

At Taylor-West & Co, we offer a beautiful range of hand-crafted frames from only the best manufacturers in Japan, France, Italy, and right here in the UK. We can safely say that the superior quality of these frames will speak for themselves, and they can last a lifetime when treated with the love and care they deserve.

We even have a range of gorgeous frames at a lower price, meaning you don’t have to break the bank to look beautiful every day.
