Kids’ Eye Tests
Your child’s vision is essential for learning and exploring the world
About 80% of school learning is visual, so clear eyesight is crucial for their development.
Our comprehensive kids’ eye tests detect even minor changes with quick, non-invasive methods. We prioritise your child’s vision as much as you do.
Why Book a Kids Eye Test?
Routine developmental checks are important but not as thorough as an optometrist’s eye test. Poor eyesight can lead to learning and behavioural issues, especially in young children who may not realise they have vision problems. Early detection of conditions like squint and amblyopia (lazy eye) allows for more effective treatment.
Ideal Age for a Child’s First Eye Test
The best age for a first eye test is around three and a half years. We have tests suitable for infants and preschoolers who can’t yet read. Even if there are no concerns, we screen children as young as 2 years old to provide peace of mind and identify any vision issues early.
What Happens During a Kids Eye Test?
We make eye exams enjoyable and child-friendly. Instead of traditional letter charts, we can use charts with shapes and pictures to keep younger children engaged.
Our optometrists ensure a welcoming process, with parents staying alongside their child throughout the test. We will measure your child’s vision and assess their prescription. We will measure how well their eyes work together, and whether they have any colour vision deficiency.
We will also examine the front and back of their eyes, and take retinal images for future comparison. We will also address any specific concerns you may have, and go over all the results with you and your child, explaining any intervention that may be indicated such as spectacles, eye exercises, further testing such as cycloplegic refraction, or onward referral.
Signs You Should Book a Kids Eye Test
Watch for these signs of vision problems:
Eye strain or head tilting
Frequent eye rubbing
Losing place while reading or using a finger guide
Sensitivity to light
Falling behind in school
Headaches or tired eyes
Misaligned eyes
Sitting too close to the TV or holding a book close
Closing one eye to see better
Avoiding screens, reading, homework, or sports
‘White reflex’ in photographs, which indicates a serious condition needing immediate attention
